pitt logo 150x75 Wannstedt at Pitt Offers no Clues on Big Ten Expansion; Illinois Game Set for NoonIts the 'dead zone' in regards to sports as far as I'm concerned (sure there's NHL and NBA playoff, college baseball, and some golf - but those are niche sports to me).  That means college sports fans continue to be consumed with expansion talk.  I'd say this off season it has hit DEF CON 'critical' as the moves being contemplated are the ones that have always talked about making all the dominoes fall in terms of conference structure.

For Penn State fans, an intriguing chess move sub-plot to all this is if Pitt could possibly end up in the new Big 10 (aka Big 16), thus adding their instate rival back to the schedule.  Take it for what its worth, but Pitt's head coach says he's heard nothing on it.

Also, the homecoming game for 2010 is set.

Many outlets have quoted Pitt's head coach Dave Wannstedt as saying that he's heard and discussed nothing on the topic.  However he also says, and I concur, that this is a topic not for head coaches, but for "higher ups" aka administrators and presidents.  I doubt many head coaches are involved in conference expansion discussions or decisions.  This even includes those with serious pull like Joe Paterno (though I could be wrong about that one).

In many businesses, sales guys do much of the grunt work in making deals happen.  But when its time for the really big deals to get done, its usually company executives that take over and negotiate directly with customer executives.  Sales guys usually know when a deal has reached the level where its way above their control.  I'd say when it comes to college football, conference expansion is similar.  Even a senior 'sales guy' like Joe Paterno won't be calling the shots on this one, and certainly Dave Wannstedt won't be either.

Penn State vs Illinois Game Time Set for Noon

Another game on the Penn State schedule has been set, and this one is the homecoming game on October 9th.  The Penn State vs Illinois football game at Beaver Stadium will kick-off at noon, though TV details have not been announced yet and likely won't be until 12 days prior to the game.
