I really don’t like calling for someone to be fired but it is time for Penn State to change directions when it comes to their men’s basketball team. Coach DeChellis is the type of guy you want so badly to succeed, he is an alumnus, he inherited a very tough situation in a losing program where the cupboard was very bare and supposedly is a work-a-holic. But the results speak for themselves.
He is 6 ½ seasons into his tenure at Penn State, so these are his players and his system. Teams under his tenure are a combined 92-115 overall and 29-79 in the Big Ten (never finishing higher than 6th in the Big Ten). Over those 6.5 years, Penn State has only won 5 Big Ten road wins and we still have not even sniffed an invitation to the Big Dance. We can't rely on easy wins and freebies from lesser teams - we should be able to take on the big dogs, and win. While on the surface recruiting has seemed to pick up, the results don’t show any improvement from the previous regime. Under Coach Jerry Dunn, who proceeded DeChellis, the Lions compiled an 82-67 record over five years and he was shown the door.
Penn State needs to finally find a coach who can make this team a consistent winning program. There is no reason that Penn State Men’s Basketball cannot succeed, they have all the needed components to be successful: large alumni base with a willingness to pay top dollar for a tier 1 coach, geographically located in a state with a strong basketball tradition, a top tier arena to play in with supposedly very nice facilities, a network which puts most games on TV and a fan base who wants to support the team.

Sorry Coach DeChellis, I appreciate your service but in sports it is all about wins and losses, and we are just not seeing enough wins.

Don’t know if its time for him to go- yet!
However, one-hundred percent- (100%) of his players staying at Penn State (Hail State)for their entire college careers have graduated. That’s something, a very, very big something.
I’ve watched as many games as I could on TV and it looks like the guys are getting very open shots, but they do not drain as many of them as they should. Can’t ask more from a coach than to draw someting up that get’s someone open. But they have to hit the shot. Foul bricks are also a problem that I do not believe De is at fault. It’s the recruting and not being able to get too many four or five star playwers to come here. Although three of the current players were given four star ratings in HS and look at them. Battle was only a three starer I believe?
One more thing please,
Bob you are wrong. Dechellis is responsible for recruiting this pack of loers. He hasn’t developed Brooks or Jones. ANd many of his players are marginal B-10 players at best. He’s had 7 years to get to the NCAA. It’s clear his program is mired in incomeptence and failure.
He needs to go NOW.
Totally agree. Fire Dechellis ASAP. The program is a total disaster and Dechellis is a weak and feeble leader. I’m tired of years of his ineptitude.
I understand players play and coaches coach, but results are all that matter.
To me it comes down to one simple fact, we hired him to make the NCAA tournament, and after 7 years we have not made it. Now, we were close last year and the NIT tourny win was nice; but we all expected much more this season. This season is a HUGE disappointment and I just don’t see us bouncing back next year to make a NCAA run, so if we finished next year with no NCAA invite, that would be 9 years. I am just not willing to wait around another year.
As for the type of players we have gotten, he has one 4-star to speak of (Brooks and he is joke). We usually get a 3-star everyyear (2009-Frazier, 2008-Babbs, 2007-Battle), but these kids don’t develop (other than Battle). I think with the right coach, running the right system, this team could prosper next year.
It is time to move on from Coach DeChellis. We are Penn State.
is this new kit for the euros?
