Not Too Early to Start Looking Towards 2010

si com top251 Not Too Early to Start Looking Towards 2010Here's something to get you over another miserable Penn State hoops loss.  Some publications and websites are already putting out their rankings for the 2010 college football season.  Never too early.

Here is the one done by Andy Staples at SI.com.  Looking at the rankings, it has the usual suspect, and also some usual interesting teams in unusual places.

First off putting Nick Saban and Alabama at Number 1 is not shocker, along with Texas and Ohio State in the top 5.  But their companion teams at #2 is Boise State (another source told me they have everyone coming back) and #5 Iowa.

Now this is just one very early source, but Penn State is ranked #12.  This is good news bad news, as a #12 ranking is pretty good, but there are 4 Big 10 teams ahead of them, #3 Ohio State, #5 Iowa, and #11 Wisconsin.

Next year is very hard to predict, typically when Penn State returns a nice size of the o-line we prosper and we return 3 of 5 starters from the o-line next year. We also return our entire WR set and all RB’s. But we of course have to count on a true sophmore with no experience to take the helm at QB. And this means very conservative offense play calling, which is always frustrating from a fan perspective.

On the D-side, we return the entire backfield (assumind D’Lynn does not transfer, which there are rumors he might). But we have to slide in an entirely new LB crew and both d-tackles. That makes me very nervous, as we all know the big ten is all about stopping the run, if you can’t do that, you have a tough time winning many games. And considering we lose the entire middle of our defense, stopping the run will be a challenges.

Of course playing at Alabama the second game of the season will be interesting.

In the end, I could see us finishing in the Top 15 or not in the Top 25 at all, we just needs some kids to step up.
